Pity Sex Live At Stuck On A Name, Nottingham 24/05/2015

Stuck On A Name is known for hosting some of the best DIY hardcore shows in the East Midlands, and have played host to bands such as Fire And Ice, Code Orange, Lord Snow, and Broken Teeth as well as an array of small up and coming bands from across the UK. But tonight it brought something new to the table, with a headline show from indie influenced shoegaze quartet, Pity Sex. By the time Walleater were set to play, there was a sign  on the front door stating a sell out show which was met by many disgruntled folk who obviously underestimated the popularity of the gig, and with such a solid line up I don't think my words really do justice to how incredible the evening was.

The evening kicked off with a stand out set from Mahogany, and with them having only played 4 previous shows, optimism was in the air. They met the audience with brief introductions and elegantly lead the way into their first song. The modesty of their presence replicated in their humble melodies. They really came into their element during the penultimate song of their set as they ripped into a catchy up beat tune, which differed greatly from the reserved and reticent tracks they played prior. The energy lifted and heads bobbed in time with the music as they graced their way to their final song.

Fade followed soon after. The contrast compared to the previous band was clear to see as they fell into a fairly average punk-esque set. After the release of their 7" earlier this year titled 'One With Serenity', high hopes were bestowed upon them but unfortunately they just didn't appear to deliver the record justice with their live show as they drawled through an adequate set. Cramped, droning guitars powered around the room at a barely tolerable pace. Despite their seemingly mundane set there were incredible elements to their instrumentation which was really refreshing to see in a scene where a lot of bands are just mirror images of each other. They are not the kind of artists I am willing to just write off as trite as seeing a band experimenting with a unique style is always an invigorating experience.

Up next were Walleater and with only one release under their belt they make it clear to see why you shouldn't judge a band based on how lengthy their discography is.  It's incredibly rare to see a group of musicians align their instruments with such perfection as what they did. Although at times the three guitars seemed to be fighting each other for breath, the layers it added to their songs was musically charming. They stormed through a relatively flawless set while their charisma beamed over the audience and sent smiles in waves across the room. After each immaculate song was through, they were accosted with applause and cheers. They left the room having truly satisfied their listeners and without a doubt gained some new fans. They thoroughly made the most of their short lived time on stage .

After an already incredible line up it would've been difficult to make it even better but the promoters pulled through and managed to secure a secret set from none other than Massachusetts indie rock band, The Hotelier! Their most recent release titled "Home, Like No Place Is There" stormed onto the scene throughout the UK and received outstanding reviews across the board which put a lot of pressure on their shoulders with people expecting an impressive show, and they certainly did not disappoint. They introduced themselves as "Hit Otherlee" to which laughter unfolded around the venue Note: "Hit Otherlee" was the anagram the promoters used for them in order to keep their set a secret until the night of the show. They played a rip roaringly good set with an acoustic like vibe rippling across the room and every element of their musicianship was filled with a sentimental and lively aura. They appeared to play all the crowd pleasing songs offering many chances for sing-a-longs. If you're looking for a band to touch a nostalgic, homesick nerve then you need look no further

By the time Pity Sex's set rolled around, the room was a buzz with anticipation which soon silenced even as they begun sound checking. As soon as they opened with their first song the room came alive as they embraced the stage like a second home. Each song rolled effortlessly one after the other, all of which presented pitch perfect vocals from vocalist/guitarist Britty Drake and with her producing such an exceptional performance, I've seen first hand how she really raises the standards for females in the scene! The whole band was truly in their element up there and with them stating that it felt just like shows they played back home it was easy to see why this was their favourite show of their UK tour. As they strummed their way into the classic "Sedated" which is off their debut album titled "Feast Of Love", four slightly over enthusiastic drunk guys made their way to the front to have a 'lil dance much to the amusement of both the audience and the band. They really lifted the mood and brought home what shows like this are all about... having fun and letting go. Despite requests for "When You're Around" which they declared they couldn't remember how to play they ended with the favoured flower girl. They left the room leaving a hint of dissatisfaction but nevertheless they were breathtakingly remarkable and I really hope this isn't the last time we see them over this side of the pond.

CHEAP ART INTERVIEW - APRIL 2013

Note: This image is not mine. All credit goes to the original photographer.

Q. Could you start by introducing yourself and tell us what part you play within the band.
A. My name is bryan and I play guitar and also do occasional vocals. Avry does lead vocals, Andrew plays drums and matt plays bass and also does vocals.

Q. How did you go about naming he band and choosing what style of music you wanted to play?
A. We got the name from a Limp Wrist song called "Cheap Art" which is about 6 seconds long if i recall correctly. They have been one of my favourite bands for a long time because they were one of the first bands to really make me think, laugh and have a new found faith in hardcore music. We all love early 80's hardcore and powerviolence and sometimes it's boring playing your standard issue hardcore. We all have great fun experimenting with time signature changes and almost constant tempo changes too. That's probably why we do it even though we're not very good at it.

Q. It sounds like you're all into fairly similar music then, is there anyone besides Limp Wrist who really influenced you personally to start creating music?
A. We're actually all into very different kinds of music but definately share a ton of the same favorite bands. As for me personally, bands like Nirvana, The Misfits, and even the band None More Black. I know Matt loves Captain Beefheart, Andrew has always said that Nirvana are his favorite band and Avry once told me Witch Hunt are the reason she wanted to be in a band.

Q. What do you think makes you different/stand out from the other bands in the scene?
A. Well we always talk about sounding more like a punk influenced powerviolence as oppose to hardcore like many other bands associated with the genre. We don't down tune a ton and we don't have those though guy tragedy vocals like a lot of bands seem to have acquired within the past ten years or so.

Q. Your songs are all generally pretty short. How do you go about writing them?
A. We often get worried about how short the song is going to be sometimes, but usually someone will have a guitar riff and bring it to practice and we'll all jam with it. Sometimes we can finish it there and then or someone takes it home to finish over the next week or so. Occasionally one of us will have a song that was intended for another band as most of us have other music projects. We'll just cut the song down a bit and turn it into our own. With that being said, 3/4's of us play guitar, bass and drums so often our drummer will write a really sick guitar riff or the bass player will think of a really good drum beat.

Q. What has been your highlight so far from your time in the band?
A. I would have to say just playing music with everyone in the band. We have played a lot of really fun shows and it's hard to pick a specific moment but I will probably always want to play music with these people and that rules!

Q. How would you describe a live show show of yours in just three words?
A. Hit or miss

Q. So do you not always get a good reaction from people?
A. Sometimes we will play shows to like 10 people. They'll like it but the mood is low and it can be like that at bigger shows too. I can only think of one show where no one even clapped when we finished playing a song. It was in Rock Hill, SC at The Sweat Lodge. Mind you, we have played two other shows there that have actually been some of our favorites, but this one made us feel so uncomfortable but in a funny way if that makes sense. Sometimes we will play shows and all of my guitar stuff gets unplugged, Avry breaks the mic and D's drums get knocked over. Those shows are rad and are the reason we love playing music. It's the chaos that fuels the tours.

Q. What would you tell someone checking out your music for the first time?
A. I'd probably just ask them if they think its any good!

Q. And finally, any last words?
A. Thank you so much Aly for listening to our band and taking an interest. We have a 7" coming out soon (mid May/early June) called Desocialized via Hygiene Records and Reality Is A Cult Records. We will have a ton of test presses which we'll be selling on our May tour.

American Football Live At The Gorilla, Manchester 16/05/2015 (Matinee performance)

After the long awaited reunion of 90's emo band, American Football, finally announced their very first uk tour with support from upcoming UK indie band TTNG, tickets for all 7 shows sold out within a matter of minutes! As the dates finally came around, social media blew up with people scrounging after spare tickets which brought home just how precious these shows were and my god what an experience it was to see them live!

As TTNG's performance came to an end and people had piled back in after cigarette breaks, the room was amass with eager fans staring at an empty stage waiting for what was possibly one of the most anticipated tours of 2015. When they eventually took to the stage applause met their entrance with open arms and as the first notes rang out of Five Silent Miles a wave of smiling faces swarmed the room. Instrumental tracks (including a trumpet solo by drummer Steve Lamos) soon followed and exposed the astounding musicianship of the members but it was when Mike Kinsella broke into the well known beginning solo of Honestly? the whole room really came alive. Bodies moved wildly with grace and heads bounced in time with their charming melodies. It's a very rare moment to see four men captivate an audience as strongly as they managed to do.

Note: This image is mine. Please do not steal it.

As the afternoon rolled on we saw them play all their top hits including songs such as I'll See You When We're Both Not So Emotional and The Regrets Are Killing Me as well as renditions of lesser known tracks. American Football brought a refreshing element to the show with a perfect coalesce of both instrumental and vocal songs. As they finished up the end of the set with The One With The Wurlitzer they promptly left the stage leaving audiences waiting patiently while muffled claps and people pining for their return echoed around the room. After a solid 5 minutes of folk awkwardly filling time the band finally graced us with their presence once again for vocalist and guitarist Mike Kinsella to jokingly ask "Shall we just play these two songs then?". Met with a mixed reply of laughs a cheers, they promptly began the emotional descent into The Summer Ends which most likely lead to a few tears being shed. They finally came to the predictable end as the guys aligned to play their most well known song, Never Meant. Cheers ripped through the venue and arms punched the air as the guitars rung out. It seemed everyone had been saving their voices for this moment as a chorus of unlikely people imitated the lyrics nonchalantly. Almost too soon, the lights went down as the band unplugged their instruments and exited the stage for the final time.

The room was abuzz with excitement as people made their way out of the venue. Astounded discussions of the talent these four men possessed could be heard throughout and many of the crowd who attended finally content after they had awaited for this moment for so long. It was great to see them perform content less well known rather than just playing songs from their album back to back which was what i expected. Their performance cannot be praised highly enough!

HVMEN TEETH

Hvman Teeth are a powerviolence/youth crew band from Nottingham, UK who take influence from bands such as Punch, Ceremony, and, Trash Talk. In the short time they've been together they have supported bands such as FocusedxMinds, Failure To Follow, and Lock and key. Their discography is forever growing and with each release their sound becomes more defined with guest vocals from people with a variety of musical backgrounds. The vitality of their live shows in astounding with show goers constantly being kept on their toes with two step riffs and side to side's. Frontman, Jack's, straight edge persona is prominent in almost all the releases but particularly their first release of May 2014 titled Pain//Cleanse. Despite the generally preachy attitude a lot of people perceive of straight edge bands, Hvman Teeth add a refreshing element to this side of the hardcore scene by bringing about the straight edge in their music without forcing it upon their listeners, although this may be because the rest of the band are complete stoners... With vocalist Jacks ever growing music projects, including one man slam band Chainsaw Castration, Hvman Teeth has unfortunately seemed to have taken a back seat in recent months, however with a release due for early summer 2015 and seeing them getting back on the local show circuit it looks like they could be set for great things fir the rest of the year.

CARISSA'S WIERD

Carissa's Wierd are one of those bands who's history has been sadly lost over the years and close to no information can be found about their time as a band which has made this post difficult to establish worthy of publishing.

This band were from Seattle, Washington and existed from 1996. During their time together they released 4 albums before parting ways after playing their final show in November 2003. In 2004 I Before E was released which consisted mostly of live recordings and three more original songs. They'll Only Miss You When You Leave was released in 2010 and is a compilation of some of their best work. It serves as a great introduction to their work. Tucson was released following a reunion show on september 24th 2011 and would be to date their very final release.

I first learned of their existence after reading on an internet forum that their song So You Wanna Be A Superhero was among the saddest songs ever written, and upon hearing it I was not disappointed but rather crying into my pillow. If depression could be recorded then this band would be it. As the variety of instrumentation used effortlessly blended together and the mournful lyrics filled with sorrow and loss crowd my emotions, making me sink down beneath the earth questioning my very existence on this planet. I hope everyone's listening experience is like this.

Carissa's Wierd have been too long overlooked and massively underrated. They are a band that means a great deal to me as I'm sure they do to a lot of people. It's difficult for any band to reach out to their listeners the way they do and for a band to impact peoples lives so greatly is an achievement. It's such a shame their time as a band came to an end with so much potential yet to be unleashed. No words I write can do them justice so I urge you to download and listen to them.

MOOSE BLOOD

These four guys from Canterbury, UK wear their hearts on their sleeves. Their new form of British Emo creates a beautifully ambient but still happy vibe, perfect for those rainy days. Whilst their bright instrumentation brings something new to the genre, their lyrics are quite the opposite. They contain more sad and self depicting lyrics for all those coming of age teenagers and anyone feeling a bit lost in their own skin; bringing home the clarity needed to get you through those difficult stages of life. They've toured with bands such as Balance and Composure, Seahaven, and Major League which for a band with an 10 song discography must be a huge achievement since they first started in the august of 2012. They get no where near the recognition they deserve! Definitely ones to watch for future releases and tours.

Shoutout to Marcus for helping me discover this band.

EPILOGUE OF A CAR CRASH... A TRIBUTE TO ORCHID...

Epilogue Of A Car Crash... A Tribute To Orchid... was released in March 2013 by an independent record label in the UK called Dog Knight Productions. They usually deal with bands who fall under the genre 'screamo' which is why this seems like such a perfect compilation for them to release.

Orchid, along with a few other bands, were one of the pioneers of sreamo music in the late 90's/early 00's. They took the original 80's sound of emo and twisted it until it became abrasive and chaotic with fast paced drumming, blood-curdling vocals, and screeching guitars. They released 3 full length albums during their time as a band along with various splits and E.P's before parting ways in 2002.

This compilation consists of 25 tracks by 24 bands (sed non satiata covered 2 tracks) and  is a great way to get a feel for what current bands within the genre are doing at present. With Orchid being such an iconic band to people and musicians within the genre, it is quite clear that a lot of the bands on the compilation were in it to just enjoy themselves, however, some of the tracks are really just a lesser version of the original which can be quite disappointing. As short as some of their songs are, Orchid are believe it or not quite technical in their sound which is where a lot of bands struggled. Stand out tracks come from Cassus, Sed Non Satiata, and Foxes. They get their covers near perfect but still manage to be able to put their own spin on their tracks and without a doubt make the most impact to the listener when hearing it for the first time. They really get across what screamo music is all about. There are tracks on here which will be disappointing but if you are a fan of Orchid and/or looking for new bands to discover them I would definitely recommend listening to this.
