CHEAP ART INTERVIEW - APRIL 2013

Q. Could you start by introducing yourself and tell us what part you play within the band.
A. My name is bryan and I play guitar and also do occasional vocals. Avry does lead vocals, Andrew plays drums and matt plays bass and also does vocals.

Q. How did you go about naming he band and choosing what style of music you wanted to play?
A. We got the name from a Limp Wrist song called "Cheap Art" which is about 6 seconds long if i recall correctly. They have been one of my favourite bands for a long time because they were one of the first bands to really make me think, laugh and have a new found faith in hardcore music. We all love early 80's hardcore and powerviolence and sometimes it's boring playing your standard issue hardcore. We all have great fun experimenting with time signature changes and almost constant tempo changes too. That's probably why we do it even though we're not very good at it.

Q. It sounds like you're all into fairly similar music then, is there anyone besides Limp Wrist who really influenced you personally to start creating music?
A. We're actually all into very different kinds of music but definately share a ton of the same favorite bands. As for me personally, bands like Nirvana, The Misfits, and even the band None More Black. I know Matt loves Captain Beefheart, Andrew has always said that Nirvana are his favorite band and Avry once told me Witch Hunt are the reason she wanted to be in a band.

Q. What do you think makes you different/stand out from the other bands in the scene?
A. Well we always talk about sounding more like a punk influenced powerviolence as oppose to hardcore like many other bands associated with the genre. We don't down tune a ton and we don't have those though guy tragedy vocals like a lot of bands seem to have acquired within the past ten years or so.

Q. Your songs are all generally pretty short. How do you go about writing them?
A. We often get worried about how short the song is going to be sometimes, but usually someone will have a guitar riff and bring it to practice and we'll all jam with it. Sometimes we can finish it there and then or someone takes it home to finish over the next week or so. Occasionally one of us will have a song that was intended for another band as most of us have other music projects. We'll just cut the song down a bit and turn it into our own. With that being said, 3/4's of us play guitar, bass and drums so often our drummer will write a really sick guitar riff or the bass player will think of a really good drum beat.

Q. What has been your highlight so far from your time in the band?
A. I would have to say just playing music with everyone in the band. We have played a lot of really fun shows and it's hard to pick a specific moment but I will probably always want to play music with these people and that rules!

Q. How would you describe a live show show of yours in just three words?
A. Hit or miss

Q. So do you not always get a good reaction from people?
A. Sometimes we will play shows to like 10 people. They'll like it but the mood is low and it can be like that at bigger shows too. I can only think of one show where no one even clapped when we finished playing a song. It was in Rock Hill, SC at The Sweat Lodge. Mind you, we have played two other shows there that have actually been some of our favorites, but this one made us feel so uncomfortable but in a funny way if that makes sense. Sometimes we will play shows and all of my guitar stuff gets unplugged, Avry breaks the mic and D's drums get knocked over. Those shows are rad and are the reason we love playing music. It's the chaos that fuels the tours.

Q. What would you tell someone checking out your music for the first time?
A. I'd probably just ask them if they think its any good!

Q. And finally, any last words?
A. Thank you so much Aly for listening to our band and taking an interest. We have a 7" coming out soon (mid May/early June) called Desocialized via Hygiene Records and Reality Is A Cult Records. We will have a ton of test presses which we'll be selling on our May tour.
